Fly, FLY... Fly Away :)

I think I am inspired only by insects.... It must be the only reason that I can fathom for a blog to emerge after 2 years 7 months and 19 days. Hmmmmmmmmm

Moving on about insects, this time it's a fly and not how it fascinates my son but how it aggravates and arouses my.... yes MY murderous Instincts. Ahhhhh. I hate flies ... I hate them with all my heart. I hate them sooooo very much that I googled fly ... for one must know one's enemy. (Evil Smile) I observe them in hiding and I gather my notes and wait and wile away.

A fly is quite simply
  1. (zoology) Any insect of the order Diptera; characterized by having two wings, also called true flies.
  2. (non-technical) Especially, any of the insects of the family Muscidae, such as the common housefly (other families of Diptera includemosquitoes and midges). Courtesy - Wikitionary

However much, I doubt if any definition quite captures its role in making mankind quite insane with frustration. Googling I have found a quote by the estimable Mark Twain that amused me, as it involved the death of a fly :)

I share

" Nothing seems to please a fly so much as to be taken for a currant; and if it can be baked in a cake and palmed off on the unwary, it dies happy."

I am for one quite perplexed as to how a relatively clean house swept, mopped frequently with a kitchen enclosed with walls, windows and doors could suddenly be infested with 10 flies the moment one starts to cook. In fact I have found in my keen observations that there is a marked increase in the numbers of the 'flying twits' the more the complex the recipe gets.

They always hover around, and land in a strategically awkward part of your anatomy the moment you are at the verge of getting the peaks of your cream/ egg whites or the minute you are stirring the milk toffee to perfection or folding the cake etc. They know by instinct the turning point of a recipe.... I swear they do ... for there is no other rational explanation.

I am paranoid about flies. I am sure they must be lurking in shadowed corners, huddled in groups of black whispering plots and plans to ruin the joy and life out of SUE... (That's me) I love cooking and I am sure they are aware of it. They must be watching with their goggled green eyes smirking while they plot. Ahhhhhhhhhh.....

Okay, more facts on the 'lurking pest'
An adult house fly has an approximate life span of 15 to 30 days. Females are able to start producing eggs after two days of life and will continue to lay eggs for about a month. Oh yeah it gets better, a female can lay about 500 eggs every three to four days. The freaking she-fly breeds about 5000 more spawns. ( If my math is right, which is often not) Anyway, Wahhhhhhhh and that's just one freaking female..... Hello... ever heard of contraceptives?

All beings exist in this world for a reason and I can only say in the case of the fly I have to agree with this poet dude Ogden Nash. He kinda put my thoughts into words

"God in his wisdom made the fly
And then forgot to tell us why."

Fly..... I hate you.

flutter by flutter by... Pretty little flutterby )!(

"Ba.. ba" he says, as we go on our post breakfast walk in the garden ... and I look around to see of course a butterfly... my nine month old son's obsession.. or should I say one of his obsessions. It was in fact one of the first ever things he actually recognised. He adoringly looks at his treasure leaning and squirming when it hides behind leaves.

I'm sure I've always loved butterflies. There beauty, elegance, fragility has always moved me. (Not to mention the blooming 'Ran one paatai samanalaya' rhyme in Sri Lankan nurseries.) But then taken it for granted, I moved on to bigger things... Joined the rat race... Found love and made a baby and the butterfly fluttered by and hovered at the back of my mind.

However, after 20+ years I am reminded by Nevan - my darling dot - the beauty and the elegance of that fragile butterfly. As he stares in fascination, I stare too... I look forward to each day waiting to see what my son will learn on that day. And while he discovers, I re-discover and while he lives the moment I re-live... Thank you Flutter-butterfly )!(
